Many Pilgrims from foreign countries have troubles making reservations of inns. There are many inns along Shikoku Henro’s Pilgrimage route, and these inns are called Henro-yado.
If you stay at Henro-yado, you must make reservations of these inns by phone in Japanese! Can you speak Japanese? Many Japanese People, especially the elderly, cannot speak English. The masters of Henro-yado are the elderly, and most of them cannot speak English. You cannot speak Japanese, and they cannot speak English. How do you make reservations of Henro-yado?
This is the most serious problem of Shikoku Henro.
About the inns of Shikoku Henro
I tell you the information of the inns.
Why did not I stay at Henro-yado?
I went on the pilgrimage of Shikoku Henro from July 21 to August 28 in 2021. In that time, I did not stay at Henro-yado. Of Cource, I can speak Japanese because I am Japanese.
Why did not I stay at Hero-yado?
In many Henro-yado, toilets and baths are shared, and there are only a few toilets and a bath. They are not separated for the male and the female. The male and the female use the same toilets and the same bath at different times.
In addition, your room has no key! Many rooms are partitioned by sliding paper doors, called “fusuma”. And many rooms have no bed, they only have sets of bedding, called “futon”, on the floor directly..
I am nervous and sensitive to other people's sounds, and want to have my personal space.
In addition, I prone to stmach problems, I spend a lot of time in the toilets. If toilets of inns are shared by guests, I don’t use toilets casually. Therefore, I did not stay at Henro-yado, I stayed hotels.
But if you stay at Henro-yado, you will be able to feel the hospitality, for example, hot and nice dishes, kindness, and lessons about Shikoku Henro’s Pilgrimage route, of the master or the mistress of Henro-yado. And you will be able to make friends with other pilgirims ,O-henro-san. You will get a lot of benefits from staying at Henro-yado.
How do you stay at hotels on the pilgrimage of Shikoku Henro?
Are there several hotels along Shikoku Henro’s Pilgrimage route? Unfortunately, many hotels in Shikoku island are located in the cities. In Shikoku island, the distance between the cities are far apart, you cannot arrive in the next city in one day.
Then, how do I stay at hotels in the cities? At the ends of days, I went to hotels in the cities by bus! In other words, after I arrived in the bus stop, that was the goal of the day, I went to the hotel by bus. Next day, I went back to the bus stop, that was the goal of the previous day, by bus.
You have access to many bus routes in Shikoku island. In Tokushima Prefeture, you can use Tokushima Bus in the main area , and Shikoku Kotsu Bus in the west area. In Kochi Prefecture, you can use Kochi Tobu Bus in the east area, Tosaden Bus in the middle area, and Kochi Seinan Bus in the west area. In Ehime Prefecture, you can use Uwajima Bus in the southwest area, JR Shikoku Bus in the middle are, Iyotetsu Bus in the nortwest area, and Setouchi Bus in the east area. In Kagawa Prefecture, you can use Kotoden Bus in the middle area, and Okawa Bus in the south area.
