Is studying difficult to do?
It would be accurate to definite that
studying is a hassle rather than difficult.
In my late fifties, I finally started studying.
When I was a schooler or a student,
I thought I could learn well.
It was baseless to think I could study well,
but I was able to do it in my own way
and used to get some results.
In my university, my major was what I wanted to learn,
so I didn’t have any problems with studying.
However, anything other than my major
I was unable to step up above the average.
I never knew why I could not way out from being average,
so I thought it was just because I was not smart.
Why do we need to learn math and physics?
What is the merit of learning history?
Is there any usage in learning classic literature? etc.
Those subjects did not any sense to me,
so I just studied to get scores like work and hated it a lot.
But everything changed when I started to watch
brain science-related sites because I wanted to know it.
A neuroscientist once said,
“Studying is the work doing with your butt. “
The moment I heard his words,
I realized that I never really studied.
Studying with your butt means sitting on the chair
and studying until you understand it.
This also means that there are no limits on
how long it takes or do it till complete the task.
For example, if you want to study world history,
you should stay sitting on the chair
until you can draw a perfect world map.
In that sense, I haven’t studied at all.
Whenever I felt my legs numb or my back hurt,
I got up from the chair and took a rest.
Once I began to rest, suddenly felt tired
and never got back to the chair.
In terms of studying in my book,
everything was middle-of-the-way,
partially knew and cut out
only part of what I wanted to know.
Even with such a partial way to study
I was able to graduate university
probably my abilities of memory and understanding
were good at that age.
As we grow older, by the way,
our ability to memorize drops down
while understanding improves.
When the memorizing capability drops off,
it gets easier to forget what is already understood.
As it progressed, some holes began to open
in the learning process, and eventually,
it became full of holes.
Things that somehow already have known flow away
like water in a jar with holes in it.
Studying means getting to know
what exactly you do not know.
If you know about what you do not know,
the necessity of knowing will be activated.
If you have a necessity of knowing,
you come to find a way to know it.
Once a method of knowing is determined,
make it systematized.
When the knowledge is systemized, start to use it.
Once the knowledge becomes too usable,
it becomes your own.
The reset button for learning is to change direction
from ways to pass tests or graduating from a school
with feelings of hate,
and restart it to develop your own brain.
