臨済宗南禅寺派圓通寺

先の黄檗山万福寺管長林文照老師は、よく澤木興道老師の話をされた。

「私は戦前、それから復員してから曹洞宗の宗門大学駒澤大学で学んだ。そのころ老師は駒澤で禅講義をされていた。老師は曹洞宗だがその考え方や性格は頑固ながらも飄々としておられた。よく坐禅をされる方だった。私たちは見習わなければいかん」と。

　澤木興道老師は「宿無し興道」と名乗っておられた。生涯にわたり檀家のある寺に住むことなく、弟子たちの寺に寄宿して縁者に法を説かれた。林管長のように教え子や弟子は宗門をこえて多い。戦後フランスで活躍された弟子丸泰仙（でしまるたいせん）は澤木興道老師の弟子である。

"Sawaki Kodo's Words　Firstly,

The former head abbot of Oubaku-San Manpuku-ji, Zen Master Bunshyo Hayashi, often spoke of Kodo Sawaki, He said, 'Before the war, and after my discharge, I studied at the Soto Sect's denominational university, Komazawa University. At that time, Master Kodo was giving Zen lectures at Komazawa. Although he belonged to the Soto Sect, his mindset and character were stubborn yet whimsical. He was a dedicated practitioner of zazen. We all ought to learn from him.'

Master Kodo Sawaki referred to himself as 'Homeless Kodo.' Throughout his life, he never resided in a temple with a patronage but stayed at the temples of his disciples, imparting the Dharma to them. Like Head abbot Hayashi, his students and disciples transcended sectarian boundaries. One of his disciples, Taisen Deshimaru, who made a name for himself in post-war France, was a disciple of Sawaki Kodo."
