- 摩訶： しばらく前、久留米の梅林寺で報恩摂心：修行があった。全国から50数名の雲水たち集まっての5泊6日の修行だった。それが終わって方丈前に雲水たちが旅姿で並んだ。みな深々とお辞儀をして最後に鎌倉市から来た古参の雲水が『般若心経』を高い声でゆっくりと唱えた。「マカーハンニャーハラミタシーンギョウー」。それに続いてみなが唱和した。春の朝日にその声は実にさわやかに響いた。みな手を合わせて遠来の雲水たちを見送った。宗教体験は言葉を超えた世界である。それが摩訶である。
- 般若: 白隠禅師は「紫の敷物の上に真珠をまいたらきれいだ。だがやぶれた布の上に真珠があればもっと目立つ」と述べている。そのように人世に於いて苦しみの経験があれば般若の智慧はハッキリする。また白隠は「牛の飲む水は乳になるが、蛇が水を飲めば毒になる」と述べている。般若は苦労の上の善なるはたらきと受け止めたい。
- 波羅蜜多: 向こう岸に渡る、という意味である。ガンジス河の向こう岸に渡るには大変な努力が要るのでこの言葉ができたと思われる。では河を渡れない、つまり修行ができない人はどうすればいいか。それにはまず合掌である。合掌をしながら他人の悪口は言えない。これは確かである。
- 心: サンスクリットでは「フリーダヤ」で、心臓、あるいは核心の意味である。般若心経は大乗仏教の核心、それで心経という。
- 経: シュートラ、縦糸の意味である。すべては縦糸の如く、真理に繋がっている。
* Maha：
Years ago, there was a Sesshin: gratitude and repentance Zazen at Bairin-ji Monastery in Kurume. Fifty-five monks from all over the country gathered for a five-day, six-night training. After it was over, the monks lined up in front of the main hall in their travelling attire. They all bowed deeply, and finally, a veteran monk from Kamakura began to recite the Sutra in a loud and slow voice, "Maka Hannya Haramita Shin Gyo."
Everyone followed and chanted together. In the spring morning sun, the sound was truly refreshing. They all put their hands together and saw off the faraway monks. Religious experience is a world beyond words. That means Maha.
* Hannya：
Zen Master Hakuin said, "If you sprinkle pearls on a purple rug, it looks beautiful. But if you have pearls on a torn cloth, it will stand out even more." In this way, if you have experienced suffering in the human world, the wisdom of Hannya will become clear.
Hakuin also said, "When a cow drinks water, it becomes milk, but when a snake drinks water, it becomes poison." Hannya wants to perceive honourable deeds as the result of suffering.
* Paramita:
It means "crossing to the other shore." This word may have been created because it requires significant effort to cross to the other side of the Ganges River. So, what should people do without crossing the river or practising? First, it is to put your hands together in prayer. While doing this, you cannot speak ill of others. This is true.
* Shin:
In Sanskrit, it is "HRIDAYA," which means heart or core. The Heart Sutra is the core of Mahayana Buddhism, hence its name.
* Kyō:
It means "thread" in Japanese and refers to the warp threads of a loom. Everything is like a warp thread, connected to the truth.
